Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta Platforms Inc. plans to invest up to $65 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives by 2025. This investment will include building a large new data center and increasing hiring for AI teams.
In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg stated that the company aims to construct a data center big enough to cover a significant portion of Manhattan. He also mentioned that Meta expects to bring online about 1 gigawatt of processing capacity this year. By the end of the year, the company plans to have over 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs) in operation.
“This is a monumental effort that will drive our core products and business in the coming years. It will pave the way for historic innovations and expand America’s leadership in technology,” Zuckerberg said.
Over the past few years, Meta has made significant investments in artificial intelligence. Recently, the company announced plans to build a new $10 billion data center in Louisiana. Additionally, Meta is acquiring new computer chips to support products like its AI assistant and Ray-Ban smart glasses. Furthermore, Zuckerberg noted that Meta plans to significantly grow its AI teams by 2025.
This announcement comes shortly after OpenAI, SoftBank Group Corp., and Oracle Corp. revealed a $100 billion joint venture called Stargate. This venture aims to build data centers and AI infrastructure across the United States.
With these strategic initiatives, Meta is positioning itself as a leader in the AI landscape. The company demonstrates its commitment to innovation and technological advancement in the digital age.
